The photographs
All nine are licensed stock from Unsplash and are credited to the
photographers who made them. They were not taken by the author of this page,
and no visit to any of these places is being claimed. Two of the nine carry no
location from the photographer; the page prints that rather than guessing.
Where one of those two names a subject, that name is the photographer's own
description of the frame and not an identification made here.
The glass
Edo Kiriko is cut by laying a thin coloured skin over colourless crystal and
grinding through it. The colour survives where the wheel never went, and the
cut faces come back to clear.
This page is built the same way round. Each view carries one overlay colour
laid across its photograph; the panels and the place names are the cut, and
the photograph returns to full strength inside them. Corners are chamfered,
never rounded — a cut edge is a facet, not a fillet.
Type is Archivo, run to the wide and light corner of its variable
axes for display, and Zen Kaku Gothic New for Japanese — a gothic rather than a
mincho, because Kiriko is Edo workshop craft and not calligraphy. Both are
self-hosted; the Japanese face is subset to the twenty-eight characters this
page actually sets.

scroll-driven animations over each section's own view timeline; JavaScript only
stands in where a browser has no scroll timelines, brings each photograph in
ahead of its view, and steps rather than slides when reduced motion is asked for.
